Assistant Professor

Jesper Holm teaches conducting and innovative Pop & Jazz choir leading at the Royal Academy of Music in Denmark (RAMA), as well as at NORD University Norway and at Codarts University in the Netherlands. He also does lectures and workshops in many European countries and China.
In addition to classical conducting education, Jesper has spent the past 25 years developing his expertise in conducting techniques for contemporary music. His work with his jazz formation Touché has provided him with the experiences he now uses as the basis for his teaching methods. He has recently released the educational app.: ”Conductor’s Toolbox” for pop & jazz choir leading. Touché, “The Vocal Big Band” marks both nationally and internationally and has shared the stage with groups like The Swingle Singers, The Real Group and New York Voices.

    On Friday, May 17th, 2024, The Royal Academy of Music (RAMA) hosts a 4-hour symposium from 10AM to 2PM at Godsbanen. The symposium will encompass a masterclass on improvisation with the world famous singer Rhiannon (US), a Vocal Painting masterclass conducted by prof. Jim Daus Hjernge (DK), and a LAB experience delving into the convergence of Rhiannon's musical realm and the VOPA world of Jim Daus Hjernge. The symposium is also an opportunity to meet the other teachers at RAMA Vocal Centre: Malene Rigtrup Madsen (DK), Jesper Holm (DK) and Peder Karlsson (SE). The masterclass ensemble is Musta Lammas (FI) and RAMA Voices. The participants at the symposium will be invited to observe and partly participate. The symposium is aimed at RAMA students, but has a few limited seats open to AAVF festival participants. Tickets for the symposium are only available as an add- on to a festival-pass.     How to instruct Pop & Jazz choirs. Focus on learning technique. "Don't sing wrong! Why spend time correcting what you learned wrong?” Use the appropriate methodology and learn only what's right. From the App. Conductor's Toolbox: Prep work on rhythm and harmony. Analyse the music. Always audible subdivisions and a clear tonal universe in the room. “The 5 focus Areas”. Floor-Roof. Work in reverse. Loop and improve. Use conducting and vocal painting. Speak Less. Improvise. Make variations. Have fun learning.

    Should Pop & Jazz Choirs be Conducted? If so, then when? How? From where? A workshop about innovative choir leading with the focus on conducting technique and body language in different styles. Spontaneous response to the magic hand. Keep it Simple. Only show what's needed. Remove "Noise". Examples from the App: "Conductor's Toolbox" will be used.
