Petra Poutanen is a Finnish musician and composer with an acrobatic voice, multiple instruments and live electronics. She has graduated from Sibelius Academy Folk Music department but her background in music is broad. Petra is inspired by viewing things from unusual perspectives, and thus sees genres as tools to be used just like instruments. She is an experimental musician mixing various international folk traditions, electronics, classical and roots music, art pop, noise and vocal music to create exciting new soundscapes
She is working both solo and with choirs, in addition to doing theatre productions and playing in various ensembles and projects. Lately, it has been improvisation that has taken her to many international co-operations and new adventures.
In 2021 she will release her debut solo album ’Pelkkä Poutanen – Pyhä Veri Vuotaa’, which contains folk music with a very modern twist and influences from around the world; Tanzanian rhythms meet Finnish runosinging, hymns are turned into dance music, and live electronics meets throat singing techniques. The thread tying everything together is the concept of the sacred, including showing how the sacred sometimes turns into something quite absurd.
